Can I buy contact lenses on line without a recent eye exam?

February 11th, 2010 | by admin |

My doc wants $50 for a special "contact exam" which my insurance won’t pay for and money’s a little tight right now.

Legally you shouldn’t be able to. A legitimate online retailer will require an eye exam that has been within 1 year. The company will collect all of your information and then contact your doctor’s office directly to verify your prescription.

If you happen to order any kind of prescription through a website that doesn’t contact your doctor to verify, I would be very weary – you don’t know what they could be giving you.

If money is so tight, why are buying contacts? Why don’t you wait until you have the cash to get an eye exam and get a correct prescription.

Depending on the state you live in- that probably is not possible. Most states require a valid and current prescription

I believe in most states, if not all, you need an rx that is less than a year old to buy contacts with.

Illegally, you could. Legally, you can’t. So do what you think is best. I would tell you to not do it.

Technically, you could buy contacts on line, but it’s best to have an exam with proper lens fitting. Many patients will have corneal bruising or scratching with improperly fitting contact lenses.

My advice is to "bite the bullet" and pay for a thorough eye exam yourself. Your eyes will thank you!

    Good luck!
