don’t you feel guilty that you have disposable contact lenses?
November 20th, 2009 | by admin |well, you know that plastic is not biodegradable, don’t you? so why do you allow your optician to give you disposable contact lenses? don’t you think you should insist on glass lenses? what does it matter if it hurts your eyes just a little bit more? it’s for the environment, right?
ADDED DETAILS: don’t you get the joke? how the hel* could disposable contact lenses fill up a landfill? it would be better to load them onto a rocket and shoot them towards the sun, where they’d vaporize. one less environmental hazard to worry about.
eyeglasses: here’s what you do: so many people all over the world need eyeglasses but cannot afford them. find opticians/charity organizations that distribute them to poverty-stricken people all over the world. then buy yourself the latest fashion, if you want. using real glass and real metal frames is probably the greenest way to go.
but you had better really, really worry about those disposable contact lenses! plastic! not biodegradable! HA HA HA!
COMPUTERS ARE ALL RECYCLABLE. SO ARE CELL PHONES. AND IPODS.
You think landfills are going to fill up with contact lenses. You are crazy.

I would never wear glass contact lenses. They are terribly uncomfortable, I heard. Why are you typing on a plastic computer??? Not being mean, just trying to show you some things should be used that are plastic, and contact lenses are WAY smaller than a computer, a car, makeup applicators, ect.
Good point though.

I had laser eye surgery, but still need reading glasses.
But to add to your question. We should go beyond that.
The waste waste waste, plastic, paper, cardboard, glass.
Most of the U.S. waste….throw it away.
I remember when I was a kid growing up we had 16oz soda bottles, 2 cents to return. We were already recycling in the 60’s long before the environmentalist showed up.
Please do not tell me I should buy carbon credits.
I would actually like to start a recycling business. But think the red tape would prevent it from being profitable.
I do have to pay the bills. But believe in recycling.

No, I don’t feel guilty for wearing disposable contact lenses. I think it would be very dangerous if I wore glass contact lenses. Think about if you get hit in the eye. It does matter if my eye hurts a little more, besides plastic contacts do not hurt my eyes. I usually recycle and try to conserve my energy for the environment so wearing plastic contacts should not really matter.

A year’s worth of disposable contacts and packaging takes up less space in the landfill than a pair of glasses and an eyeglass case….
My husband’s solution? He wears old, yellowed glasses…not too attractive! but I guess he is a real earthy guy. I would say grungy….OH, and he likes to save on getting his haircut too! Hates to use the electricity for the shaver…I AM NOT KIDDING!! I am laughing, but I am not sure its funny!!!

I have been wearing the same pair of gas permeable contact lenses for the last twelve years and I try to use as little plastic as possible.

I’ve considered getting contacts but decided against it wondering which is more waste, the contact lenses or getting glasses?
I personally went with glasses just because you can keep them for a long time and didn’t want to go with all the waste and hassle of the cleaning solutions, packaging, ordering, gas spent picking it up each month, better chances of eye irritation, throwing away the contact lenses, etc.
I was thinking how that probably adds up faster over time than the glasses. But no side by side comparison has been done, so I cannot say for sure.
Yea, people here may say that contact lenses themselves may not be a big waste, but it all adds up. Lastly, with glasses, you can simply reuse the frame years later to have new lenses made to your new prescription or needs, with disposable contacts, once you’ve used them, thats it, no more use.
