Can I buy contact lenses on line without a recent eye exam?

February 11th, 2010

My doc wants $50 for a special "contact exam" which my insurance won’t pay for and money’s a little tight right now.

Legally you shouldn’t be able to. A legitimate online retailer will require an eye exam that has been within 1 year. The company will collect all of your information and then contact your doctor’s office directly to verify your prescription.

If you happen to order any kind of prescription through a website that doesn’t contact your doctor to verify, I would be very weary – you don’t know what they could be giving you.

Does anyone get daily disposable contact lenses from Specsavers?

February 9th, 2010

I get them from here through lensmail . I’ve just opened them and they are using a different type, as the packaging has changed from blue to black and so have the actual lens ‘pods’. They are now called ‘ opsys’

The shop is shut now and I’m getting nothing from the net so can anyone tell me are they just re-branded or are they something new?

OR have they sent me someone elses LOL.

hi, ciba dailies have changed their name to opsys. But its still the exact same lens inside. I havnt got a clue why they’ve done it – except to get everyone worried and confused! But anyway its fine to use them they are the exact same lens!

what cosmetic/ non prescription contact lenses like to wear?

February 9th, 2010

i’m looking to get some wild eyes contact lenses, but i want to know what they are like to wear before i do. are contacts easy to put in/take out? do they hurt? do you still have full vision? are they dangerous?

If u want to start wearing them , I suggest first using disposable ones. (I use Johnson&Johnson 1 -day Acuvue)The ones you wear for a day and through them the same day – since they are more hygienic. Dont get too excited and wear them for long hours. I was told not to wear them for more than 7hrs a day. Go slow, don’t start wearing them everyday.

When I first got them, it took me 20 min to put one in my eye. It can get a bit frustrating, but you’ll soon get used to it. If u have big eyes, it should be easier. And it isn’t hard to take them out at all. So don’t worry about pinching ure eyeball.

Is it safe to buy contact lenses online?

February 9th, 2010

I want to change my eye color with lenses. I don’t need any prescription in them just a change in color. Is there a really safe website you can order them from or it to risky?

well yes people do buy online and are satisfied but I do say the element of risk is there. Buying it in person is still the best thing since you are able to inspect it yourself.

How do you know when to dispose of your disposable contact lenses?

February 7th, 2010

They have daily disposables, and two-week disposables, and all kinds of different disposables…. If you’re worried enough that you have to ask about it, then I think you should follow the directions on the box, honey.
Otherwise, you can be like the rest of us, who wear them till they fall apart, or don’t stay in, or get all foggy (protein!), and risk an infection :-)

Is there a website where you can buy contact lenses without needing your Doctor information?

February 7th, 2010

I’m looking for a website that sells contact lenses where I don’t need to have my doctor approval.
I went and had an eye check a little less than a year ago and tried to buy contacts on 1800-contacts.com, but they told me the eye check I had was different from getting your eyes checked for contacts. I don’t want to have to pay for another eye doctor visit. So does anyone know a website that won’t ask for this information?

Contact lenses? Can we safely reuse those daily disposable contact lenses?

February 4th, 2010

I wear contacts once or twice a week. I recently purchased a box of 1 day acuvue lenses. After wearing a pair for five hours, I take them off and, since they don’t look cracked or torn I wonder why I can’t just store them in a sterile solution and wear them again a couple of days later. What will happen if I do that?

No, never re-use the lenses. It is meant for one time use thats y it is called dailies lenses

What is the differece between prescribed contacts and cosmetic contact lens?

February 4th, 2010

- How are they different?
- What are the good’s and the bad’s of cosmetic contacts?
- Where can i get cosmetic contacts?

Lots of details please

Actually, they’re more similar than you might think. Any contact lens has to be prescribed by an eye doctor because contacts are technically medical devices. Contacts come in many different sizes and fits, so your eye doctor has to select a lens that fits your eye properly and lets enough oxygen through. If your contacts don’t fit you correctly, serious damage to your eyes can occur. What you mean by cosmetic contacts is probably colored contacts that don’t have any power (prescription) in them. These can be fit and prescribed by your eye doctor as well.

Where can I buy contact lenses without a valid prescription?

February 4th, 2010

I need to buy new contacts but I cannot afford an exam right now. Does anyone know of any sites online to order contacts here they do not verify a prescription? PLEASE do not preach to me about how I need to go to a Dr and that it’s dangerous to order without a Rx. I’ve been wearing contacts for 17 years and I’ve had the same prescription for the past 5 years so it’s not a big deal. I just don’t have the money right now to get a new exam. So anyone who knows of a site I can purchase from, let me know. Thanks!
I already have my old prescription, I just cannot use it because it’s been expired for a few months. There has to be some site that will sell without verifying?? Please only answer if you know of one.
First of all, anyone telling me to go to a site that sells colored contacts, does me no good. They are not prescription lenses thats why they sell them with a Rx.
Secondly, I know it’s important to have my eyes examined every year. As I previously stated, I’ve been wearing contacts for 17 YEARS so I am not new to them. I will go get an exam, I just cannot afford it NOW.
Third, there ARE places online that sell prescription drugs without a prescription. I’ve seen them. SO I would think there would be places that will sell contacts that way as well. Please stop preaching everyone and read what I’m saying. If you can’t tell me a website you know of to go to that do NOT sell only color contacts, PLEASE let me know, if not then I don’t really want to hear your preaching. THANKS.

Sorry, Sweetchic, but I have to agree with the browneyedgirl optician. They require you to have an exam every year not only because your prescription may have changed, but to make sure that your eyes are healthy enough to continue wearing contacts. So regardless of whether or not you think your prescription has changed, you may be unaware of any possibly eye health issues you may be having from wearing contacts.

The person above me who posted about any place selling you contacts without verifying that you have a valid prescription losing their license is absolutely 100% correct. Its like going to your pharmacy and trying to get an expired prescription filled for an anti-inflammatory or a pain medication, or even your birth control prescription. It may be the same prescription, but they won’t allow you any refills until you’ve been to the doctor FIRST. Same thing with your contacts.

Part of the responsibility of being given a prescription for contacts is seeing your eye doctor annually so they can renew the Rx for you…and browneyedgirl is right…if you cannot afford to make annual appointments with your eye doctor, then perhaps glasses would be better for you. I agree that exams can be costly, but when you figure the cost and repercussions that come with being irresponsible and lax about the health of your eyes, its far more expensive to NOT see your eye doctor annually. Your doctor also reserves the right to refuse fitting you with contacts anymore if you do not follow the doctor’s and the FDA’s regulations…

Sorry to sound preachy…but them’s da brakes, Sweet Chic!

And to LC above me….yeah, I’m sure there are sites that sell them – ILLEGALLY…in order to obtain them LEGALLY and to eliminate the risk of infection and complications, she needs to be seen ANNUALLY for an exam. You can take your ignorance AND you bad language and go pound sand cuz I gave you a thumbs down, too

***There are no websites where you can purchase ANY type of prescription medications WITHOUT a valid prescription. They MUST check and verify everything with your doctor BEFORE they confirm and ship an order. You CANNOT buy vicodin, or oxycontin, or birth control pills online LEGALLY without supplying site with your doctor’s name, address, and phone and/or fax number. And I don’t care HOW long you’ve been wearing contacts…LEGALLY YOU CANNOT PURCHASE THEM WITHOUT A VALID RX.

If you don’t like the answers you’re getting, then don’t ask the question – because you KNOW the answer already. Google it and see what you come up with. Good luck with that, Sweetchic.

In the office I work in, we get phone calls all the time from 1800-CONTACTS and its an automated recording that supplies us with the patient’s name, DOB, address, and also the prescription that was given to them by the patient. We pull the file and if the exam is expired, we will not verify it…plain and simple. Any good eye doctor will not simply renew a prescription because the patient is in the unique position of being "low on flow" for an exam. The doctor may let you purchase a box, or give you a few trial pairs to hold you over, under the condition that you will schedule an appointment. But they are under no obligation to cut you ANY slack because you’re money is tight. The doctor’s office has policies and they are willing to bend a little – to an extent. But I doubt it very much that your eye doctor will simply renew your Rx for another year because you cannot afford an exam. And I think any eye care professional on Y!A will agree…especially since if the person were to come down with some type of infection or complication and the doctor renewed the Rx without seeing the patient, the doctor’s office can then be held liable…
